LUTHER'S WORKS
I am not in favor of buying the set of Luther's Works. If it is a choice between owning some Luther and reading those volumes often and having the complete American edition gathering dust…
Luther said, "Not many but much." A complete Lutheran library does not need more than 100 books. We should think in terms of reference books that will last several generations, not every last book about Luther as a substitute for reading Luther. By all means avoid books on Luther's theology. The Large Catechism alone is better than all of them put together.
If some Luther volumes must be purchased, consider these first:
The Table Talks, not completely reliable but enjoyable, unique in religious literature. Sermons on the Gospel of John, forced upon Luther late in life, a masterpiece. Genesis Commentary, another late effort, whether judged as commentary or sermons. Psalms. As a monk, Luther lived and breathed the Psalms, the hymnal of the Bible.
